Formulations Manager

As a Formulations Manager, you will work closely with the Client Success Manager to manage and execute the formulation development and commercialization of beverages for our clients. The Formulations Manager maintains close relationships with flavor house partners, explores new partnerships, and focuses on developing BevSource branded products by exploring innovation in raw materials, flavors, and new beverage types. The Formulations Manager actively provides insights to the company on current and future trends and develops application strategies to drive private label products and BevSource branded materials and applications.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):

  • Bring client beverage ideas to reality through formulating products based on SOW requirements, developing project briefs, and reviewing growth and commercialization requirements
  • Manage relationships with flavor houses
  • Explore value-add opportunities and innovation strategies, and feed BevSource with insights on developing CPG trends
  • Frequent communicating to new and existing customers to improve products and prices based on knowledge
  • Development of BevSource branded pre-mix, flavors and other raw materials
  • Communicate status of upcoming beverage formulation projects and releases
  • Establish, organize, and maintain project timelines and records
  • Coordinate all formulation projects and ensure all company resources are utilized
  • Ensure all deadlines are met for the successful completion of formulations projects to best of abilities
  • Clarify project requirements, document concepts clearly, and manage expectations
  • Work with our partner network of ingredient and flavor suppliers to procure optimal ingredients for beverage projects according to specified requirements (i.e. claims, nutritionals, regulatory, marketing, organoleptic, etc) and suggest improvements for the most common applications
  • Serve as a technical, scientific, and regulatory expert and advisor to the company and clients for beverage applications 
  • Manage commercialization process for production set-up of new formulas
  • Recommend commercial batching procedures and establish liquid specification targets
  • Utilize MRP/ERP/PM software and systems effectively
  • Support a culture of continuous improvement
  • Track time spent on projects to further analyze BevSource customer profitability
  • Participate in the BevSource EOS/Traction Process
  • Develop, maintain, and utilize beverage industry knowledge – Be the expert!
  • Traveling to flavor house, ingredient, and copacker partners to monitor large-scale production for new and/or existing BevSource clients may be required
  • Advise and communicate general processing, blending and cost saving strategies
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related scientific field
  • 5-7+ years minimum experience in R&D, laboratory, flavors, ingredients, or related field
  • 2+ years’ experience in formulation development, ingredient functionality and product commercialization
  • Sound knowledge of functional RTD beverages and ingredients
  • Proven track record of successful product launches
  • Strong experimental excellence and well-developed communication and collaboration skills
  • Strategic thinker with ability to build effective plans to support strategic initiatives
  • Strong understanding of beverage industry standards of quality, food safety and compliance regulations including CFIA, FDA, USDA, TTB, Organic, Kosher, Gluten Free, etc.
  • Understanding of sensory, chemistry and microbiology as it relates to product formulations
  • The ability to plan, design samples, problem solve, and set priorities
  • Ability to learn new products and processes quickly
  • Enthusiasm for research and formulating/improving beverages
  • Experience in working with a team in a client services, consulting environment
  • Detail-oriented, with a strong ability to review documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
  • Ability to work with a sense of urgency in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-directed and hard-working
  • Ability to discuss challenging product development options, formulation trade-offs in regards to: processing, scale-up, commercial feasibility, claims, and compliance. Etc.
  • Energetic and Enthusiastic with a willingness to learn and grow within the company
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel up to 15% of the time (international travel may be required) and ability to work nights and weekends when traveling
